MORE than $212,000 was raised through Guardian Group ‘‘Shine’’ 5k and 10k Charity Walk and Run event held on November 28, at the Nelson Mandela Park. The event attracted 3,540 runners and walkers.
The ‘‘Shine’’ race proceeds were presented yesterday to ten charities which included Express Children’s Fund, Blink Bmobile Foundation, Rainbow Rescue, KIND, Just Because Foundation, Jaya Lakshmi, Mayor’s Christmas Fund, Diabetes Association, Heart Foundation, and Hope Centre.
Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony at Guardian Group’s Auditorium in Westmoorings, CEO of Guardian Group, Ravi Tewari, commended the staff for the spirit of volunteerism they demonstrated in preparing for the day’s event, and stressed the importance of giving back to the community.
He said ‘‘Shine’’ provided an opportunity for Guardian Group to bring staff, communities, families and corporate Trinidad and Tobago to demonstrate national citizenship, and care for the less fortunate.
“How do you make the world a better place? It is a responsibility of the corporate sector to seek to make this world a better place.
“The answer is, you do so by each and everyone doing their part to improve themselves, or to serve others,” he said.
“He explained that the organisation does so by creating an environment for people to do their part, and indicated that it is the corporate role, and their duty to do their part.
“By making the world a better place, we make Trinidad and Tobago a better place, and we all enrich our own lives. In this regard I am tremendously proud what the staff at Guardian did, and what our kind sponsors have achieved through Guardian ‘Shine.
Tewari said the most important aim of Guardian ‘‘Shine’’ was to raise money for many worthy charities.
